Representation matters

Although Hungary has a diverse population, this diversity is rarely represented in publishing and popular literature. The lack of representation and visibility has proven to have negative effects, as it can lower the self-esteem of underrepresented people and make others less receptive to empathy and acceptance. At OPEN's Backstage event, we spoke to our invited guests about why it is important to take action to ensure that the lived experiences of underrepresented people are reflected in the books we consume.

The Future is Female

How do their lived experiences differ and meet? What is intersectionality? What are the distinctions between a Roma and a non-Roma woman? Why is it important that the dialogue on gender equality is trans-inclusive? On the occasion of International Women's Day 2022, we held an extraordinary conversation to raise awareness about the diversity of women's opportunities, life paths, struggles and achievements.

One Love

During the evening, guests treated to a fascinating roundtable discussion on the August 2021 issue of ELLE magazine's One Love magazine, which explores the diversity of love and emphasises the importance of acceptance. The triple cover of ELLE magazine featured LGBTQ couples for the first time, a taboo-breaking initiative in the history of the Hungarian press. Invited guests talked about how diversity and acceptance are represented in the media and how they can contribute to positive social change.

Roma Inclusion

The OPEN Community was able to see a spectacular performance by T6 Tudás Hatalom called ‘Gypsy Hungarian’, founded by a group of Roma youth.

The 5th edition of OPEN Backstage was about the visibility of disabled people in everyday life, in physical and virtual space beyond representation.

Pre-Pride event

During Pride week we organised a special edition of OPEN Backstage to celebrate LGBTQ+ people and to warm up for the Pride march with drinks and fascinating discussions.

Women in pop culture

This edition of OPEN Backstage was about gender balance, and most of all the representation of women and the female perspective in visual and popular culture. We had an interactive roundtable featuring Veronika Hermann (research fellow), Éva Szombat (photographer) and Laura Döbrösi (actress) moderated by WeAreOpen CEO Melinda Miklós.

Hidden Stories?

The event covered LGBTQ+ representation in arts and culture, featuring Kriszta Székely, Ádám Nádasdy, and Alinda Veiszer. After a discussion with our guests, improvisational theatre Grund performed their spectacular live performance “Taking you home.”

One Day

The first ever episode of OPEN Backstage featured the screening of the phenomenal Hungarian movie, “One Day”, directed by Zsófia Szilágyi who was also present at the event. Following the screening, Zsófia was joined in a discussion by Dávid Szél, psychologist, blogger at Apapara blog and Glamour Hungary editor-in-chief Krisztina Maróy.
